Accessibility Remix Project¶
Overview¶
Accessibility Remix Project is a 2042 special release by Charlie Rivera and the Band (CRATB) that produced remixes of the band’s catalog with described audio, visual albums, and ASL music videos. The project was a groundbreaking accessibility initiative that influenced how labels across the industry thought about equity in music production and distribution.
Background and Significance¶
The release built directly on the disability-justice framework established by Crip Time (2031) and extended through CRATB’s working life. Where Crip Time had named the conditions of disabled creativity, Accessibility Remix Project operationalized those principles in distribution: described audio for blind listeners, visual albums for d/Deaf audiences, ASL music videos that treated signing as legitimate musical performance rather than translation.
Cultural Impact¶
The project shifted industry conversations about equity in music production. Practices that had been treated as accommodations—described audio, ASL interpretation—were reframed by the album as integral to the work rather than supplementary. Subsequent labels referenced the project as a model for accessibility-as-default rather than accessibility-as-add-on.
